Security Alert: Wednesday, March 14, 2018
UCPD has become aware of the following two robberies that occurred off campus over a short period of time:
At approximately 7:25 p.m., Wednesday, March 14, 2018 – An individual not affiliated with the University walking on the sidewalk off campus at 5409 S. Ingleside was approached by three unknown subjects who struck the victim with a blunt object, took an iPhone, laptop, and wallet before fleeing to a waiting dark colored sedan. The victim was transported to the Mitchell Emergency Room by Chicago Fire Department EMS for evaluation and treatment. The Chicago Police Department is investigating this crime.
At approximately 8:50 p.m., Wednesday, March 14, 2018 – A University student walking in the alley off campus near 5117 S. Ellis Avenue was approached from the rear by an unknown suspect who threw the victim to the ground, took a satchel and fled on foot southbound in the alley. The victim reported no physical injuries. The Chicago Police Department is investigating this crime.
Both UCPD and Chicago Police have increased patrols in the area.
Be alert and aware of your surroundings at all times. Do not resist an armed robbery unless absolutely necessary. Avoid using cell phones or other electronic devices while on the street. When walking, try to walk with a group or have a friend walk with you. There is safety in numbers.
Familiarize yourself with the location of the University’s emergency phones. If you see suspicious activity, please report it immediately to police by activating an emergency phone or by calling the UCPD when you get to a safe location. Use the UCPD’s Safety Escort Program and when possible use public transportation.
