Security Alert

Sunday, May 31, 2020

As cities nationwide contend with a range of safety challenges, the University has been monitoring and responding to incidents in our area.

Beginning at noon on Sunday May 31st, 2020, CPD and UCPD have responded to multiple incidents of vandalism and looting that have impacted several businesses on the 53rd street corridor as well the corner of 55th and Lake Park. In addition, police have received one report of a robbery occurring off-campus in the 5600 Block of Lake Park and a battery under the 57thstreet Metra viaduct. The Chicago Police Department and the University of Chicago Police have increased their presence in the area and are working collaboratively to address the reported incidents. If at all possible, please avoid this area until city authorities have determined the area is safe. Please remember that the City of Chicago has enacted a temporary curfew that begins at 9pm each evening through 6am each morning. At this time, there have not been any reported incidents occurring on-campus.

Be alert and aware of your surroundings at all times. Do not resist an armed robbery unless absolutely necessary. Avoid using cell phones or other electronic devices while on the street. When walking, try to walk with a group or have a friend walk with you. There is safety in numbers.

Familiarize yourself with the location of the University’s emergency phones. If you see suspicious activity, please report it immediately to police by activating an emergency phone or by calling the UCPD when you get to a safe location. If you are concerned about your safety as you walk within the UCPD's patrol area, call 773.702.8181 and request a safety escort. Use public transportation when possible.
