Getting around the city
There are numerous public transportation options on and near campus, including buses, CTA trains, and commuter rail lines.

CTA Buses
Several Chicago Transit Authority buses serve the University of Chicago campus. Students can ride CTA buses with their Ventra U-Pass card. All other riders are required to pay the appropriate CTA fare. All CTA buses are ADA accessible and equipped with bike racks.
CTA Trains
The CTA’s rail system travels throughout many of Chicago’s neighborhoods and into a few surrounding suburbs as well. Students can ride CTA trains with their Ventra U-Pass card. All other riders are required to pay the appropriate CTA fare.
Metra Electric
Metra provides commuter rail service throughout the Chicago metro area. The Metra Electric District Line runs through Hyde Park and can be accessed at several train stations. All students are eligible for a free, Day Pass 5 Pack each academic year, which can be used on any Metra line, by registering on my.UChicago.edu. Standard Metra fare rules apply.
South Shore Line (NICTD)
This commuter rail line provides service between the South Bend Airport and Millennium Station in downtown Chicago.
TRANSPORTATION AT UCHICAGO
- Garfield Red Line Station
The CTA Red Line travels to the downtown Loop area.
When using this rail line, take the #55 bus route to/from the Garfield station. The University’s Red Line/Arts Block shuttle route also provides service between campus and the Garfield Red Line. - Garfield Green Line Station
The CTA Green Line travels to the downtown Loop area.
When using this rail line, take the #55 bus route to/from the Garfield station. - Metra: 59th Street Station
Serves the Metra Electric District Line.
This station is located along South Lake Park Avenue at 59th Street. Use CTA routes #2, #6, #15, and #28 to go between campus and the stop. Use University Shuttle Routes Midway Metra, Friend Center, Central, and South to go between campus and the stop. - Metra: 55th-56th-57th Street Station
Serves the Metra Electric District Line.
This station is located along South Lake Park Avenue at 55th, 56th and 57th Streets. Use CTA routes #6, #15, #28, #55, and #171 to go between campus and the stop. Use University Shuttle Routes Friend Center and East to go between campus and the stop. - Metra: 51st-53rd Street Station
Serves the Metra Electric District Line.
Located along South Lake Park Avenue between 51st and 53rd Streets. Use CTA routes #2, #6, #15, #28, #171, #172, and #192 to go between campus and the stop. Use University Shuttle Routes 53rd Street Express, East, and Regents Express to go between campus and the stop. - South Shore Line (NICTD)
Runs daily between the South Bend Airport and Millennium Station.
To access campus, use the 57th Street Metra station. Use CTA routes #2, #6, #15, and #28 to go between campus and the stop. Use University Shuttle Routes Midway Metra, Friend Center, and Central to go between campus and the stop.

Commuter Benefits
The University of Chicago’s Human Resources office offers commuter benefits for qualifying faculty and staff. Benefits-eligible faculty and staff can pay for qualifying transportation programs through the University’s Commuter Benefits administrator, Wageworks.
Metra Discounts
The Cook County Department of Transportation and Highways is subsidizing all trips on the Metra Electric and Rock Island lines for the next two years . With this discount, the fare is half of the full fare. The discount is available to everyone and applies to all fare products.
