Security Alert

At approximately 6:30 p.m., Sunday, August 23, 2020 – A University student walking on the sidewalk at approximately 5530 S. Greenwood was approached by an unknown subject who pushed the victim to the ground and attempted to take the victim’s backpack. According to the victim, the suspect observed a University of Chicago security officer in the area and fled on foot in an unknown direction with a companion who was standing nearby. No property was taken from the victim. The victim reported no physical injuries. UCPD is investigating this incident and has increased presence in the area.


Be alert and aware of your surroundings at all times. Do not resist an armed robbery unless absolutely necessary. Avoid using cell phones or other electronic devices while on the street. When walking, try to walk with a group or have a friend walk with you. There is safety in numbers.

Familiarize yourself with the location of the University’s emergency phones. If you see suspicious activity, please report it immediately to police by activating an emergency phone or by calling the UCPD when you get to a safe location.
