Inclement Weather Forecast
JANUARY 11, 2024
The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for the Chicago region, starting Friday morning through Saturday morning. The message advises people in Chicago and nearby parts of Illinois and northwest Indiana to prepare for heavy and blowing snow, with possible accumulations of more than eight inches and wind gusts as high as 45 mph. Following the storm, temperatures are expected to dip below zero with wind chills as low as 25 degrees below zero.
Due to the severe weather forecast, individual University offices and facilities may curtail some activities scheduled for Friday and Saturday while maintaining critical care and other essential functions. Check the websites of specific UChicago offices/facilities for any schedule changes due to the storm.
Many University services will continue during this period. We are deeply thankful to all University personnel with duties that are essential in such times, for their help in ensuring the University's core functions remain in operation. Please note:
- Personnel in UChicago Medicine and Biological Sciences Division who perform clinical or other essential functions will be expected to work on Friday and should plan ahead with caution. Other UChicago Medicine employees should consult with their supervisors with questions regarding their roles and assignments.
- Essential safety personnel, including employees with the University of Chicago Police Department and Facilities Services, will continue to provide key services. Security officers will be removed from outdoor posts if conditions reach unsafe levels; "green light" safety ambassador vehicle patrols will continue to operate.
- Transportation services, including shuttle buses, will operate on schedule unless conditions make that impossible or unsafe. We will post about service delays or suspensions on Transloc and the Department of Safety & Security website.
Please exercise caution if traveling during this time. Consult the Illinois Department of Transportation throughout the storm period for the latest road conditions in Illinois.
We are closely monitoring the impact of this weather system and will communicate any further changes to campus operations if necessary.
