Security Alert

The below narrative contains information regarding several aggravated batteries related to a shooting that was reported to the University of Chicago Police Department. Campus security alerts are notifications sent to the University community as required by the Clery Act.

At approximately 5:20 a.m., Sunday, July 7, 2024 – Chicago police and UCPD officers responded to calls of shots fired at 5717 S. Cottage Grove Avenue. Upon arrival officers found three victims on the sidewalk suffering from gunshot wounds. Witnesses observed an occupant of a dark grey SUV point a firearm from the vehicle and fire shots in the direction of several people standing near a parked vehicle in what initially appears to have been a targeted shooting. The suspect’s SUV then fled southbound on Cottage Grove Avenue away from the Medical Center area. The victims, whose university affiliation is unknown at this time, were transported to the University of Chicago Adult ER. The Chicago Police Department is investigating this crime.


Be alert and aware of your surroundings at all times. Do not resist an armed robbery unless absolutely necessary. Avoid using cell phones or other electronic devices while on the street. When walking, try to walk with a group or have a friend walk with you. There is safety in numbers.
