Update on security measures
From: Eric Heath, Associate Vice President for Safety and Security
Date: October 21, 2022
The University received a large volume of messages this week concerning an October 18 Institute of Politics discussion, including an anonymous email with a threat directed at the University. The email was brief and did not include reference to a location or time. The University of Chicago Police Department determined that it did not constitute a clear or immediate threat and did not warrant sending an alert to the campus community. The UCPD has continued to investigate the incident; in cases such as this we also notify and coordinate with local and federal authorities. We are not sharing further details while the incident is under investigation.
Out of an abundance of caution, the University took security measures including adding security personnel in key locations. The October 18 discussion was held via Zoom to allow for a constructive dialogue on the topic, and the discussion proceeded without disruption. The IOP posted a video recording of the discussion.
