OCTOBER 13, 2022

To: All Students
From: Eric Heath, Associate Vice President for Safety and Security, and Michele Rasmussen, Dean of Students in the University
Subject: Safety and Security Notice
Date: October 13, 2022

The University learned this morning that last night around 10:30 p.m. a student in the College who was walking near East 65th Street and South Stony Island Avenue was shot in the course of an attempted armed robbery, sustaining an injury that is not life-threatening. The student was transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center and is recovering. University staff are in contact with the student and their family and will ensure that they have access to the support services and resources they need.

Upholding the safety of the University community is a paramount priority. While this incident occurred outside the authorized patrol area for the University of Chicago Police Department, UCPD has offered to assist the Chicago Police Department, which is investigating the shooting.

Unfortunately, robberies are a persistent challenge citywide, and have continued to increase in Chicago and in cities across the U.S. over the last year. As a reminder, these safety tips are available for a number of situations, and include guidance for safety in the city. These include:

  • Always stay aware of your surroundings

  • Plan ahead for any trips in the city

  • Travel in groups of two or more when possible

  • Avoid distractions such as cell phones or headphones

  • Keep valuables out of sight

  • Don’t fight to keep valuable items

The University offers many resources for students and employees to stay safe and to report crimes. We encourage you to download the UChicago Safe mobile app for public safety contact information and other features such as requesting a safety escort or sending your location in real-time to a friend. Deans-on-Call are also available to support students 24 hours a day, seven days a week; they can be reached by calling the UCPD at 773.702.8181 or texting them directly using the UChicago Safe mobile app.
