At about 11:43 a.m. today, an officer with the University of Chicago Police Department who was on patrol encountered an individual who was on foot with a handgun near the corner of 53rd St. and S. Woodlawn Ave. The officer stopped his vehicle to investigate. The individual fired shots, and the officer then fired his weapon, striking the individual. The suspect was transported by ambulance to the University of Chicago Medical Center for treatment. No one else was physically injured.
An investigation into this incident is ongoing by the Chicago Police Department as well as internally by the University. The University will share more information as it becomes available. Following UCPD protocol, the officer is being placed on mandatory administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigations. We extend our concern to everyone involved in this incident and their families.
