Fire Safety at the University of Chicago

DECEMBER 18, 2024

Dear Faculty, Other Academic Appointees, Postdoctoral Researchers and Staff,

I write today with information on fire safety at the University of Chicago. In the event of a fire, it is important that all members of the University community understand how to report the emergency and safely evacuate the building.

What to Know

Know the location of the emergency exits in your building, learn the emergency phone numbers on campus or program them into your phone, and understand the various ways to notify others in the event of an emergency.

  • Notify: In a fire emergency, pull the nearest pull station to notify occupants in your building.
  • Evacuate: Learning evacuation routes now will help you move quicker in an emergency. Emergency evacuation maps are posted near elevators and along common paths of egress in buildings.
    • When evacuating, stay calm and put time and distance between you and the dangerous situation. Leave large personal items behind and use emergency exits. Never use an elevator during an emergency evacuation. Follow the instructions of emergency personnel when they arrive on scene.
  • Report: Dial 123 from any University phone or 773.702.8181 from a cell phone to reach the University of Chicago Police Department (UCPD). Download the UChicago Safe App for additional emergency resources.

More Information

Please review the University’s Fire Safety – Emergency Action flyer and familiarize yourself with Environmental Health and Safety’s Fire and Life Safety Program, which has information on preventing and reducing injury, loss of life, and property damage related to fire incidents. A few important links from that program are below:

Employees who are required to take the online Fire Safety and Evacuation training will continue to receive automated training notification emails with a link to the training.

Sincerely,

Eric M. Heath, Associate Vice President for Safety & Security
