Update on Recent Armed Robberies
OCTOBER 22, 2023
The University of Chicago Police Department has located and apprehended a suspect in a recent cluster of armed robberies near campus.
Following multiple robberies on Thursday, UCPD's Strategic Operations Center studied extensive video footage and identified a stolen vehicle and license plate linked to the robberies. UCPD created an alert on the vehicle that was shared with the Chicago Police Department.
Late Friday, the vehicle returned to the vicinity of the previous robberies and it was detected within minutes by UCPD's license plate alert system. The Strategic Operations Center immediately sent the multiple license plate alerts to UCPD patrols, who were able to use the series of locations to find and pursue the vehicle.
The suspect vehicle crashed near 55th Street and Indiana; UCPD arrested one suspect, a juvenile, and the other occupants of the vehicle fled the scene. UCPD seized the stolen vehicle and recovered several personal items from at least one of Thursday night's robberies.
Because the Chicago Police Department is the investigating agency for the off-campus armed robberies, they determine any future charges and will lead the investigation based on the new suspect and evidence.
UCPD will continue supporting the Chicago Police Department to apprehend the remaining suspects.
The University is grateful for the diligent work by UCPD with the support of our community, which led to this important work to address the recent robberies and uphold the safety of our campus and nearby neighborhoods.
