Subject: Free Video Doorbell Program
Date: May 31, 2022

As noted in the Spring Safety Update, the University is launching a free Ring Video Doorbell program for residents in our neighboring communities. I am writing to share more details of how local residents can participate in this program.

The University’s Department of Safety and Security (DSS) is committed to helping make neighborhoods safer for everyone. As part of our efforts to enhance community safety, our department is donating a limited supply of video doorbells for local residents, to help reinforce household safety. Doorbell cameras also have the potential to assist with investigations of nearby crimes.

Program Details

  • 500 Ring Video Doorbells will be available at no cost to residents of nearby neighborhoods, including members of the University community and those with no University affiliation.

  • Applicants who meet the eligibility requirements and submit an application via the form located on DSS’ website will be selected to receive a free device on a first-come, first-served basis.

  • Individuals are responsible for their own installation and maintenance costs, and residents must be authorized by the property owner to install a video doorbell.

  • We ask that residents receiving a donated device consider registering the device with the Chicago Police Department’s private camera registration program, to assist with investigations of crimes near your residence. Registering your device is optional, and it does not give the police access to anyone’s camera system or footage. Such access for any crime investigation requires the owner’s direct consent.

Please visit DSS’ website for more details on the program including eligibility requirements and instructions on how to apply for a device.

Safety is a paramount priority for the University of Chicago, and the Department of Safety and Security (DSS) operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to promote safety on campus and in the extended patrol area surrounding campus. We value your feedback as we continue to enhance our safety resources. I encourage you to contact our team with any questions or suggestions. I wish you a safe and productive summer.

UPDATE: PROGRAM IS NOW CLOSED. ALL CAMERAS HAVE BEEN DONATED.
