Wind Chill Warning
JANUARY 19, 2025
The National Weather Service has issued a cold weather advisory for the city of Chicago due to a stretch of bitterly cold weather with dangerously cold windchills through Wednesday, January 22.
While the University of Chicago will be closed on Monday, January 20, due to the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, we will be closely monitoring the weather in the Chicago region.
The coldest weather is expected to arrive overnight Monday into Tuesday morning, with actual temperatures at -4 to -6 and wind chills of -20 or colder at times during the morning commute.
Here are some tips to stay safe during extremely cold weather from the National Weather Service:
- Minimize travel.
- Stay indoors during the worst part of the extreme cold.
- Wear layers of loose-fitting, lightweight, warm clothing and a hat.
- Cover your mouth to protect your lungs from extreme cold.
- Try to stay dry and out of the wind.
Due to the bitterly cold temperatures, please use caution during your commute. Consult the Illinois Department of Transportation for the latest road conditions in Illinois.
Check PassioGO for any delays involving UGo Shuttles.
You can contact UCPD at 773.702.8181 or 911 if you are experiencing a cold related emergency.
The University will continue to monitor the National Weather service's forecasts, including watches and warnings, and will communicate changes to campus operations as needed. You can also refer to UChicago Safe social media channels (Instagram, Facebook, X) and the Department of Safety and Security's website for the latest information.
