Staying Safe

Security Alert: Saturday, July 7, 2018

The below narrative describes two Robberies that were reported to the University of Chicago Police Department on July 6, 2018.  Both incidents share similar characteristics and occurred within a short span of time which suggests a possible pattern.

At approximately 9:36 p.m., Friday, July 6, 2018 – A University faculty member was approached by two unknown offenders while waking near 5400 S. Ridgewood Court.  One of the offenders displayed a handgun and demanded the victim’s book bag containing several items of property.  The victim complied and the offenders fled southbound on Ridgeway Court to a gray four door sedan.  The victim reported no physical injuries.  CPD is investigating this case.

At approximately 10:36 p.m., Friday, July 6, 2018 – An individual not affiliated with the University was approached by two unknown offenders while walking southbound at 5346 S. Cornell Ave.  One of the offenders demanded the victim’s property and when the victim did not comply, the second offender displayed a handgun and took the victim’s handbag containing numerous personal items.  Both offenders were last seen fleeing eastbound from the location.  The victim reported no physical injuries.  CPD is investigating this case.

Be alert and aware of your surroundings at all times. Do not resist an armed robbery unless absolutely necessary. Avoid using cell phones or other electronic devices while on the street. When walking, try to walk with a group or have a friend walk with you. There is safety in numbers.

Familiarize yourself with the location of the University’s emergency phones. If you see suspicious activity, please report it immediately to police by activating an emergency phone or by calling the UCPD when you get to a safe location. Use the UCPD’s Safety Escort Program and when possible use public transportation.
