Protect Your Property

Being aware of your surroundings and being prepared for unexpected situations go hand-in-hand with city life. The University of Chicago encourages you to make simple safety practices a part of your daily routine to help keep you safe and protect your personal belongings.

Register Your Bike

You can register your bike with the UCPD by contacting the Community Relations Unit at 773.702.6008 or ucpd-cru@uchicago.edu. The UCPD will give your bike a numbered identification sticker and keep it on record. If your bike is lost or stolen, an ID number can assist in the recovery of your property.

Protect Your Laptop

The UCPD can register your laptop computer and affix a laminated bar code to it so it can be more easily identified if lost or stolen. Contact the UCPD's Community Relations Unit at 773.702.6008 or ucpd-cru@uchicago.edu for more information.

TIPS TO SECURE YOUR RESIDENCE

  • Lock your door, even if you are leaving for a few minutes. Do not prop open doors. When you leave, be sure to lock your windows as well.

  • Consider purchasing renter’s insurance to cover damages to or theft of your personal belongings.

  • Before you leave for an extended period of time, such as during break or for vacation, stop newspaper delivery, have a neighbor pick up your mail, and set your phone ringer to the lowest volume.

  • Do not admit any unknown persons into your building, apartment, or room. Use a peephole to confirm a visitor’s identity. Don’t buzz a visitor into the building unless you are certain who it is.

  • For landlord-tenant problems, call the city’s non-emergency information number, 311.
