Guidelines for Shuttle Passengers

The UGo Shuttle program is a free shuttle service provided by the University of Chicago. UGo shuttles travel on and around the greater campus area as a safe and convenient way for all students, faculty, staff, postdoctoral researchers, other academic appointees, and University of Chicago Medicine staff to get around.

Each UGo shuttle is equipped with a card reader, located just inside the door of the shuttle. All passengers are asked to tap their valid UChicago-issued ID, University of Chicago Medicine ID, or Laboratory Schools or Charter School ID on a card reader each time they board a UGo Shuttle. The card readers are used to collect information on the peak times and routes used by the various parts of the University community. This data allows us to make informed decisions about the routes, stops, and schedules of UGo shuttles, ensuring that we continue to meet the needs of our riders.

Who Can Ride?

Shuttle service is provided for all current University of Chicago students, faculty, staff, other academic appointees, postdoctoral researchers and affiliates, and University of Chicago Medicine staff members. These passengers can ride UGo Shuttles by tapping their valid University-issued ID or University of Chicago Medicine ID on a card reader as they board.

Students and staff of University of Chicago Charter School and Laboratory Schools may also ride the shuttles. These riders should show the driver their school ID.

Patients of the medical center may ride the shuttles. Alternative options for getting to or from the medical center campus are CTA routes 2, 4, 55, 171, 172, and 192.

Visitors & Family Members

Visitors are welcome to ride the shuttles with University-affiliated individuals. The host individual should tap their ID once for themselves and once for each visitor so that we receive an accurate ridership count.

Some family members of University affiliates may qualify for a card that’s accepted on the University’s shuttles. Please contact the appropriate ID office to determine their eligibility. If family members do not qualify for a card, they may still ride the shuttle with you as a guest.

UGo Shuttle ID FAQs

  • The card readers help improve our analysis of ridership trends by allowing Transportation & Parking Services to collect information about the time riders board the shuttle and what their affiliation is (student, faculty, staff, etc.). The only information gathered by Transportation & Parking Services when you tap your ID is your affiliation and the time you boarded the shuttle. Names and any other data on your ID card is not collected or used in transportation‐related analyses. Collecting data on the peak times and routes used by the various parts of the University community will allow the University to make more informed decisions about routes, stops, and transportation resources.

  • If you are currently affiliated with the University or medical center, your card should work on the shuttles. When you tap your valid ID on a card reader, you will see a green light.  If your card does not work, please contact the appropriate ID office for assistance.
