Final 2025 Crime Statistics Show Decrease Across Most Categories

JANUARY 30, 2026

Robberies fall to historic lows in University of Chicago (UCPD) patrol area

Crime fell in the UCPD patrol area in 2025 as robberies dropped by more than 40 percent, with some areas reaching the lowest levels in more than 50 years of recorded statistics.

The UCPD patrol area experienced a second consecutive year of substantial declines in both robberies and overall violent crime. In addition to the robbery decrease, total violent crime dropped by more than 25 percent.

“This progress is occurring at a time that the University has been implementing safety initiatives throughout the patrol area and the City of Chicago also is experiencing a significant downward trend across categories of violent crime,” said Eric Heath, senior associate vice president for operations. “We are always working to make further improvements in partnership with our community, and we will continue to pursue strategies to help keep our neighborhood safe.”

Year-end crime reports dating back to 2022 are available on the Safety and Security website. Highlights from the 2025 report include:

  • Robberies were down 40.6 percent, dropping from 192 to 114 incidents reported to UCPD across the patrol area.
  • Total violent crime was down 25.4 percent, falling from 511 to 381 incidents reported UCPD across the patrol area.
  • The UCPD patrol area includes Hyde Park and Kenwood, and portions of the Oakland and Woodlawn communities. In each of these communities, robberies and violent crime declined by at least 20 percent within the areas covered by the UCPD patrol area.
  • On the University of Chicago's campus, there were a total of three recorded robberies in 2025, a 40 percent decrease from 2024.
  • While most categories of crime fell, cases of theft continued to be a concern, with a 16 percent increase in the Hyde Park-South Kenwood area and a 7 percent increase across the full UCPD patrol area. The majority of these cases were retail thefts - a category that has lagged behind overall crime reductions in Chicago and other major cities.

UCPD collects and tracks index crime categories in accordance with the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting guidelines and shares this information with the Chicago Police Department to better inform collaborative patrol strategies.

UCPD has primary responsibility for patrolling the University of Chicago campus and University property.

The Chicago City Council has expanded UCPD’s jurisdiction over time, and it serves in a supportive role in its current extended patrol area where the Chicago Police Department is the primary policing agency.

The extended patrol area goes from 37th Street in the North to 64th Street in the South, and from Cottage Grove Avenue in the West to Lake Shore Drive in the East.
