Staying Safe

Security Alert: Tuesday, November 10, 2020

At approximately 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, November 10, 2020 – A University student walking westbound on the sidewalk at 1150 E. 58th Street in front of Saieh Hall was approached by two unknown subjects, one of whom displayed a handgun and demanded the victim’s property. The victim handed an iPhone to the offenders who fled on foot eastbound on 58th Street. The victim reported no physical injuries. UCPD has increased presence in the area.

In addition to this incident, two additional robberies were reported to UCPD that occurred off-campus at 5700 S. Blackstone and 5723 S. Dorchester within several minutes of the incident above.  All three incidents shared similar characteristics, occurred within a short time span and within close geographic proximity, suggesting that the three incidents are likely related. 

Be alert and aware of your surroundings at all times. Do not resist an armed robbery unless absolutely necessary. Avoid using cell phones or other electronic devices while on the street. When walking, try to walk with a group or have a friend walk with you. There is safety in numbers.

Familiarize yourself with the location of the University’s emergency phones. If you see suspicious activity, please report it immediately to police by activating an emergency phone or by calling the UCPD when you get to a safe location. Use the UCPD’s Safety Escort Program and when possible use public transportation.
