Submit a Compliment or File a Complaint
We Welcome Your Feedback
The University of Chicago Police Department welcomes and encourages the public's feedback. You can compliment us, report a concern, or file a complaint in several ways.
To provide general feedback, thank an officer, or pass along a compliment if a UCPD officer exceeded expectations or was particularly helpful, call the department at 773.702.8181, complete the feedback form, email us at cops@uchicago.edu, or simply visit the UCPD headquarters (850 E. 61st Street).
CALEA Compliance
Anyone wishing to provide comments regarding our agency's compliance with CALEA standards, engagement in the service community, delivery of public safety services, and overall candidacy for accredited status, may provide comments to CALEA through the following Public Comment Portal. These comments can be in the form of commendations or concerns. The overall intent of the accreditation process is to provide our agency with information to support continuous improvement, as well as foster the pursuit of professional excellence.
Filing a Formal Complaint
The UCPD expects its officers to treat every member of the public fairly, professionally, and with respect. Complaints from the public regarding the conduct of our officers are taken very seriously and are thoroughly investigated.
Those who choose to file a formal complaint are required to sign a written or electronic statement attesting to their claim. Individuals who want to provide feedback, but do not wish to participate in the formal complaint process or wish to remain anonymous, may do so by completing the feedback form. However, the ability of the department to investigate any claims of wrongdoing, without the full cooperation of the complainant, is limited.
Formal complaints can be initiated any of the following ways:

Electronically fill out and submit the online Compliments & Complaints Form on our website.

However, this sometimes reduces the ability to gather all relevant facts related to the complaint.

Formal Complaint Investigation & Review Process
The Department of Safety & Security’s Office of Professional Accountability is responsible for managing, conducting, and assigning internal affairs investigations, including formal complaints.
Once an investigation has been concluded, the complainant(s) will receive a written response from the University’s Associate Vice President for Safety and Security explaining the findings. The UCPD submits the completed investigative reports to the Independent Review Committee (IRC) for review. The IRC produces annual committee reports of all incidents and recommendations—available to the campus and community below.
