CALEA Assessment of the University of Chicago Police Department Communications Center

APRIL 7, 2023

ACCREDITATION ASSESSMENT TEAM INVITES PUBLIC COMMENT

A team of assessors from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA) will be conducting an assessment of the University of Chicago Police Department (UCPD) Communications Center beginning February 24, 2023 virtually, and continuing Monday, April 10, 2023 in-person, examining all aspects of the UCPD Communications Center’s policies and procedures, management, operations, and support services. The assessment is part of the voluntary process required to achieve Communications accreditation by CALEA, a recognition of law enforcement professional excellence. The UCPD achieved their initial Advanced Law Enforcement Accreditation in 2014. UCPD is also accredited by the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators (IACLEA).

As part of the assessment, and on an ongoing basis, agency employees and members of the community are invited to offer comments to CALEA regarding the agency’s (UCPD Communications and UCPD itself) compliance with CALEA standards. Comments may be submitted through the following link: https://cimrs2.calea.org/578. The link may also be accessed via a UCPD webpage.

An overview of the CALEA process, including the titles of standards, can be found on CALEA’s website at www.calea.org. Comments may also be sent to: Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA), 13575 Heathcote Boulevard, Suite 320 Gainesville, Va., 20155, or emailed to calea@calea.org.

The assessment process will be conducted by two CALEA Compliance Service Members (CSM), and one site-based CALEA assessor, Robert Stack, retired Director of the Lexington, Kentucky Division of Enhanced 911. The CSMs and assessor will review written materials, interview individuals, and take a tour of the facility, for evidence of compliance. Once the CSMs and assessor complete their review, they will report back to CALEA. CALEA will then determine whether the UCPD Communications Center will be granted accreditation status. Accreditation is for four years, during which time the agency will submit annual documentation demonstrating continued compliance with standards.
