Security Alert: Monday, October 16, 2017

UCPD has become aware of the following two armed robberies that occurred off campus in close proximity. Their location and the number of suspects involved suggests a pattern. The second incident was a delayed report to UCPD:

At approximately 8:15 p.m., Friday, October 13 – An individual not affiliated with the University walking in the courtyard of an off campus apartment complex at 54th Street and Hyde Park Boulevard was approached by three unknown subjects, one armed with a handgun. The suspects pushed the victim to the ground and took his gym bag before fleeing on foot. The victim suffered an injury to his elbow and was transported to the hospital by Chicago Fire Department EMS for treatment.

At approximately 10:35 p.m., Friday, October 13 – Two individuals not affiliated with the University walked into the vestibule of an off campus apartment building on South Everett between 55th Street and 56th Street and were approached from behind by three unknown subjects, two armed with handguns. One suspect struck one of the victims with his fist and announced a robbery. After taking the victims’ property, the suspects fled in an unknown direction. The victims declined medical attention.

The Chicago Police Department is investigating these crimes.

Be alert and aware of your surroundings at all times. Do not resist an armed robbery unless absolutely necessary. Avoid using cell phones or other electronic devices while on the street. When walking, try to walk with a group or have a friend walk with you. There is safety in numbers.

Familiarize yourself with the location of the University’s emergency phones. If you see suspicious activity, please report it immediately to police by activating an emergency phone or by calling the UCPD when you get to a safe location. Use the UCPD’s Safety Escort Program and when possible use public transportation.
