June, 2011 Campus Safety Update
To: The Campus Community
From: Marlon Lynch, Associate Vice President for Safety and Security and Chief of Police
Date: June 3, 2011
During the next few days, the campus will host many important ceremonies and thousands of visitors. Academic studies are concluding and patterns are changing. Some members of our community will be moving their belongings. It is a time for celebration, but it is also a time when we can become distracted, and when unusual activities around us might go unnoticed.
So as we enjoy the moment, I would ask all of you to take a few basic precautions to reduce the opportunities for crime. If you are traveling in the neighborhood in the evening or at night, please use the transportation services offered by the University and detailed below. Make sure to keep rooms and vehicles locked when not in use, and if you are in the process of moving, ask a friend or relative to keep an eye on your belongings. Take time to familiarize your guests with the neighborhood, and encourage them to take simple precautions.
Violent crime in the Hyde Park-South Kenwood neighborhood and throughout the University of Chicago Police Department coverage area decreased to record lows in 2010, and has dropped still further in 2011. Nonetheless, crime in all urban areas increases during warm weather, so please be alert and help make this end to the school year a safe and enjoyable one.
