DriveCam Being Installed on UGo Shuttles

First Transit Inc., the University’s shuttle vendor, has begun installing a new technology system on two of the University shuttle routes to help provide a safe ride for passengers and drivers and ensure that drivers are complying with traffic laws and company policies.

Shuttles that serve the 53rd Street Express and CIE routes will be the first to have the new system, known as DriveCam, installed, while the entire fleet of University shuttles will have DriveCam by the start of Autumn Quarter.

DriveCam’s Video Event Recorders (VER) record driving data to provide feedback to the driver to enhance safety. Video and audio, focused on the road outside the vehicle and on the driver, are continually recorded on a short loop but only stored when the vehicle is involved in a collision, the driver brakes hard, risky driving behavior is detected, or another potentially dangerous event occurs. The DriveCam VERs also have manual buttons that can be triggered by the driver in the event of an incident or emergency.

DriveCam is already in use at Princeton, Harvard, and other universities that contract with First Transit to operate their shuttle service. This type of technology has also become an industry standard for municipal transit providers.

First Transit is paying for all costs associated with the purchase and installation of this equipment. Any event-specific footage captured through DriveCam will be housed by a third party vendor.
