Update on Recent Robberies

The safety of members of the University community is a paramount priority. Recent incidents of robberies taking place on and near campus have understandably been a cause for concern for many on campus. The University of Chicago Police Department (UCPD) is taking numerous actions in response to these incidents to help keep members of our community safe. These include:

  • Posting additional UCPD officers in strategic areas on and near campus with the specific goal of robbery reduction
  • Requesting additional units from the Chicago Police Department's 2nd and 3rd Districts to patrol near campus
  • Assigning two additional Safety Ambassador (Green Light) vehicle patrols between 55th and 60th Streets from noon to midnight each day
  • Reassigning an additional Safety Ambassador (Green Light) vehicle closer to campus
  • Increasing the number of Safety Ambassador (Green Light) vehicle patrols in main thoroughfares near campus
  • Working with the Chicago Police Intelligence Center to develop investigative leads

There are also many existing resources that are available to our community, including:

  • Safety Escorts: If you feel unsafe for any reason while walking to in the UCPD patrol area, you can call 773-702-8181 and be escorted to your destination.
  • UGo Shuttles: Operating day and night on and around the greater campus area.
  • Lyft Ride Smart: Students are eliible for seven free rides per month (up to $10 off per ride) from 5:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m. seven days a week.
  • Late-night Parking: You can use your UChicago ID to park for free between 5:00 p.m. and 3:00 a.m. at the Campus North (Ellis) Garage at 5505 S. Ellis Avenue and the Kimbark South Garage at 6021 S. Kimbark Avenue.
