Clery Act Reporting

The federal Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act, also known as the Clery Act (Act), is designed to:

  • Inform students, employees, prospective students and employees, and the interested public of safety information at the nation’s federally-funded institutions of higher education

  • Broadly require certain policies be disclosed

  • Deliver awareness programming to the school and its community

  • Communicate with the campus and larger communities about safety issues

  • Provide statistics on campus crime and discipline to interested parties and the federal government

To meet certain aspects of the Clery Act requirements, the University of Chicago's Department of Safety & Security publishes and/or maintains the following documents:

  • The Annual Security & Fire Safety Report which includes, but is not limited to, crime statistics for the prior three years, policy statements regarding various safety and security measures including information on missing student notification procedures that pertain to students residing in on-campus residential housing facilities, campus crime prevention program descriptions, and procedures to be followed in the investigation and prosecution of alleged sex offenses

  • A Daily Crime and Fire Log listing daily incidents that are reported to the University of Chicago Police Department (UCPD) and that occur within UCPD’s patrol jurisdiction

  • Timely Warnings/Security Alerts used to alert University community members of potentially dangerous and ongoing criminal incidents

  • Emergency Notifications sent using the University’s cAlert system to inform members of the University in the event of a significant emergency or dangerous situation on campus involving an immediate threat to the health or safety of students, faculty, staff, postdoctoral researchers, or other academic appointees

The Department of Safety & Security has a formal process for Campus Security Authorities (CSAs) to report crimes, as required by the Clery Act, to the Office of Campus Safety. CSAs are members of the University community who have a legal obligation to notify the University of any crimes that have been conveyed to them, if the crimes fall under the Clery Act and occurred on or within locations defined by the Clery Act. The reporting process helps ensure that the information is evaluated on a timely basis and can be appropriately sent to members of the campus community and is published in the Annual Security & Fire Safety Report.
